For the 3rd Saturday now I have been going to the island of Docho to teach the high school students for a couple of hours. The past few ferry rides have been VERY irritating and uncomfortable. Rosa Parks uncomfortable, like hey whitey, get the hell off our ferry.
Trying to find my happy place and just relax I find myself surrounded by rowdy Koreans who are getting ready to go to the island of Hongdo (which is apparently very beautiful) for hiking and whatever else they do there.
Out comes the Hite (beer), delicious dried squid snacks and of course the Soju. This is great. Oh by the way, it's 8 in the morning and they are getting plastered already. Then all the ajuma's pass some gum around and I can just see where this is going. It's not like that one annoying person who is snapping their gum, it's ALL of them.
So create the picture in your mind. Waygook sitting in the middle of beer, soju, gum snapping, yelling, and dried squid being passed around at 8am.
I lasted about 7 minutes before I left my seat and went and sat on floor downstairs.
Very comfy.
I wanted to start to cry but I had to laugh.
Luckily the ride home was much much better.
